Tile and Grout Cleaning Tips from the Experts

tile and grout cleaning

Nothing can make tile look worse that dirty grout and nothing can destroy the look of a room like dirty tile. If you want to keep your tile and grout looking like new, here are a few tips straight from the experts at ServiceMaster of Buncombe County.

Cleaning Tile

Use a mild detergent or cleaning solution to clean tile surfaces on a regular basis. If your tile begins to form a hazy film, you can remove it by buffing it with a clean cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner. To address ceramic tiles that have been permanently stained, we suggest using:

  • Hydrogen peroxide for coffee, tea or juice stains
  • Club soda and water for grease stains
  • Diluted bleach for ink stains.

In the case of ink stains, soak a cloth in the bleach mixture and lay it on top of the tile(s) with stains. Leave the cloth in place until the stain is gone and then rinse the entire area thoroughly.

Cleaning Grout

Although often more challenging than tile, grout can be cleaned in any part of the home by:

  1. Wiping down the grout with hot water to remove surface dirt and grime.
  2. Spraying a cleaning solution on the grout and letting it stand for five minutes.
  3. Scrubbing with a soft brush. (Avoid mettle brushes that can scratch tile and damage grout and consider using a standard or electric toothbrush to get into every crack and crevice.)
  4. Rinse thoroughly with hot water.

For particularly stubborn grout stains, you can treat overnight with a pasty mix of two parts baking soda and one part water.
