How to Prevent Water Damage

3 Simple Steps to Save Your Home

Prevent water damage

Most of the time, water damage in your home can be prevented with a few key strategies. Are you ready to do some key checks to ensure that leaks don’t disrupt your life? Simple checks that can save you thousands of dollars are worth doing to avoid the loss of precious belongings. Are you ready?

  1. Change the hoses on the back of your washing machine. Hoses wear out and cause leaks in an area of your home that doesn’t get a lot of attention. Washing machines have two types of hoses, an inlet hose and a drainage hose. The inlet hoses that work best are flexible metal hoses. They are a cheap change that makes all the difference. Metal hoses won’t get cracks that appear in rubber hoses.
  2. Clean your gutters. A clogged gutter can back water up under shingles and into your home. Cleaning gutters isn’t fun, but it does save you bigger headaches. even if water doesn’t back up under shingles, it can funnel water where you don’t want it.
  3. Check waterline to your ice maker. It’s another waterline that doesn’t get attention, but could cause havoc. Pull the refrigerator out and check to make sure that the water hose that feeds the ice maker isn’t kinked, cracked, or worn. A simple check can save you from a flooded kitchen and surrounding rooms.
There are always more areas to check, but ServiceMaster of Buncombe County hopes you do some simple preventative actions to keep from having a problem in the first place.
