5 Tips for Preventing Water Damage This Flood Season

It’s hurricane season, which means an increased potential for possible flood and water damage. With the recent weather associated with Hurricane Florence, Asheville and surrounding area homes and businesses may have already been subject to water damage. Floods can occur due to a variety of weather conditions, from hurricanes and tropical storms to severe thunderstorms. Here are a few tips from the experts for preventing water damage:

1. Seal and Caulk Doors and Windows

The envelope of your home consists of the exterior doors, walls, roof and windows. Make sure these areas are as watertight as possible to prevent water from seeping into your home from severe weather.

2. Have Your Roof Inspected

Make sure to have your roof inspected regularly to check for holes, loose shingles, cracked caulking and rust spots to help avoid a roof leak that could potentially cause internal water damage, and eventually even mold damage.

3. Consider Installing a Sump Pump

If your home contains a basement or crawlspace, consider installing a sump pump to help remove water from under your home. If your home already has a sump pump, have an inspection to make sure it is in good working order and that all the sump pump drains are clear.

4. Invest in Sandbags

To prevent flood water from infiltrating your home due to flash floods this hurricane season, consider investing in sandbags to block up holes and create a barrier around your home.

5. Make Sure Your Appliances Are Above the Flood Levels

To prevent damage to washers, dryers, hot water heaters and other appliances, make sure they are raised above the expected flood water levels. This will help alleviate the amount of damage your home incurs if flood waters do happen to penetrate your house.
